Vintage Cottage Dinnerware

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is my Vintage Cottage Collection

It’s handmade…one piece at a time. Each piece is slightly different, making each one unique and different. I go into more detail in this post…

There’s so many other glazes…I want to try. I guess I’ll have to make lots of little plates and do some glaze testing.

Star Bowls and Ornaments

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

These are some of my new star bowls. I’ve been experimenting with different textures. They’ve been bisque fired, but I haven’t glazed them yet. But now they’ll have to wait until I set up my new workshop.

These are the first star bowls I made. They came out really nice. The blue one was glazed in…Vintage Blue by Duncan and the other one was gazed in…Rustic Mustard by Duncan. I love these glazes. They work so well with texture.

I love making star ornaments

These came out really cute. I make these in different sizes, even small ones for little tress. I think I’m going to make some for our tree.

These off white stars are really cute too. Now I have to decide…if I want the red ones, or the off white ones for our tree. Maybe I’ll just have some of each, that sounds good.

I think we’re going to need a tree in every room!

These stars make great gift tags too.

What color star ornament would you like on your tree?

Palmeida’s Lace

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Palmeida’s Lace

I’d like to introduce you to Palmeida Machado

The inspiration behind Palmeida’s Lace, my husbands grandmother!

She was born on July 26, 1899…on an Island called Terceira, also referred to as the “Ilha Lilás” (the “lilac” or “violet” island), it’s an island in the Azores archipelago, in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the larger islands of the archipelago, and is the location of the historical capital of the archipelago, the Azores’ oldest city.

The girl on the left, is my husbands mother Laura and the girl on the right is his aunt Rose.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Palmeida gave my husband and I…a very large collection of her handmade Portuguese lace, for our wedding. A lace bedspread, tablecloths, table runners and a lot of doilies!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’ve kept them well-preserved over the years. I actually only used one small table-cloth to cover one of my grandmothers vintage tables.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I started making pottery in August of 1990, and in 1991…I dug out the plastic bag filled with Palmeida’s lace and took just a few small doilies out…to use for texture. I used them for a while, then I stopped for some reason. I’m not sure why? I guess I wanted to try something different, and then I probably forgot all about it. I’m bringing it back now.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Here’s a heart dish in Indigo Blue

It came out great! My husband loves it too, it’s his favorite color.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I love this glaze!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Here’s one in cream

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

On this one…I applied three coats of violet underglaze, washed it off, leaving the underglaze in all the crevices. Then I glazed it with a clear gloss glaze.

It’s so pretty!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A true family heirloom from me to you!

Olive

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This glaze is called…Deep Olive Speckle

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s another great glaze by Potters Choice. It’s easy to use, brushes on nicely and is very consistent. I haven’t had any problems with it…at all! And it’s fantastic with texture. You can see every single detail. I really like that!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s definitely a keeper!

PC 29 PC 41

A while ago, I purchased two bottles of PC -41 Vert Lustre…mainly because it looked like a really nice dark green. It’s another great glaze by Potters Choice. It brushes on really nice, and it fires well…but it’s really difficult to photograph because it’s so glossy. If you don’t need to take photos, then it’s great!

After working with clay for almost 25 years, I’m getting a little picky with my glazes. They have to brush on easy (if I’m not dipping), they have to be consistent, and they have to photograph well. That’s really important if you sell online. You need good photos. So, if a glaze doesn’t photograph well…it’s gone!

I wasn’t pleased with myself for purchasing two bottles, I usually only buy one bottle at a time when trying out a new glaze. So, I decided to layer it with another glaze and see how that would work out.

I choose to layer it with Deep Olive Speckle.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Now, this is much better! I can photograph it…Yay!

The color is a little different from the test piece by Potters Choice, I kind of like this color better. It’s different because Potters Choice used 2 coats of Deep Olive Speckle and then 2 coats of Vert Lustre on top…four coats total. Four coats scare me, I think that’s a little too much glaze. I don’t want drips (I hate drips), and I don’t want the glaze to run onto my shelf. So, I used 2 coats of Deep Olive Speckle and 1 coat of Vert Lustre on top…three coats total. I like it! I think I’ll keep it. What do you think?

I think I’ll call this color…Pacific Pine

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Here’s a close-up view

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After trying it out on some leaves, I wanted to see how it reacted with texture. So, I tried it out on a couple of Birdie Bowls. You can see the texture through the glaze, but not as clearly as if it were just Deep Olive Speckle. That’s because Deep Olive Speckle is a translucent glaze and Vert Lustre isn’t. But, I like the way it looks. What do you think?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Here’s the other Birdie Bowl. There’s still some glare from the glossy glaze though. I’ll have to do some extra photo editing the next time I use this glaze combination.

I think this color would be great around the holidays.

deep olive speckle2

Since that glaze combination went well, I think I’ll try these glaze combinations, and see what happens. My test pieces probably won’t look exactly like these, because I’m not using 4 coats. We’ll see what happens!

Hmmm…I have a lot of glaze testing to do!

Leaf Ornaments and Magnets

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I love leaves, I don’t know why? I just do!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I like using scraps of clay to make leaves. It’s a great way to use up those bits of clay that you really can’t do anything else with.

Glaze Combinations

Here’s some of the glaze combinations I’m wanting to try on my bottles and vases, especially the simple, clean line forms. However, I think these could look great on the pieces with the handles too. Here’s a look at the sketches from yesterday’s post, just in case you missed it.

Which color combinations do you like?

From My Sktechbook

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Here’s a little sneak peek inside my Sketchbooks!

I’ve been sketching, drawing and doodling since I was very young. Give me some pencils and paper, or crayons and coloring books and I was a very happy girl! I’d doodle on just about anything. My school work would sometimes have little flowers on it. My book covers would be covered in my drawings, doodles and big bubble letters. I couldn’t help it! If I had a pencil, pen, or better yet…a colored pencil in my hand, I would doodle and draw.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

These sketches are about ten to twelve years old. I’m not sure I still like the one on the right? But I still like the one on the left!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

These are so pretty. I love these shapes and I do love my sassy handles. A timeless design with a little modern flair.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I think these are my favorite, so far anyway!

I love the round shapes and just a hint of sassiness in the handles.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I love ancient, old world pottery, and timeless designs. I love incorporating a timeless form with my own design and making it new and fresh. When I add my sassy handles, texture, text, or whatever else I decide at any given moment, and then add interesting glaze affects, it becomes new and fresh. I leave a little bit of me in and on every piece.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’ve actually never made these. But one day I will. I love these handles!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I sketched these about 6 months ago. I wanted something simple, with clean lines. Something that could go from modern to contemporary, to rustic (depending on the glazes I use) and even country. I think this design fits that goal. What do you think?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I sketched a bunch of these about 6 months ago too. I had an idea about using inspirational text one this design, like dream, hope, wish, love etc. Each word with have a different design.

I’m really looking forward to making these!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Sunday, I sketched these. Clean simple lines again in different sizes. I can just see a group of these clustered together. I can’t wait!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’m really liking these simple forms!

What do you think?
